Friendship in the Time of New Media
I realize this article is 4 years old, but I'm still grossed out. →
Why is it still okay to write shit like this?:
“However, there is something that you absolutely never hear from a male friend who is hymning his latest (female) love interest: ‘She’s a real honey, has a life of her own … [interlude for attributes that are none of your business] … and, man, does she ever make ‘em laugh.’”
1. “Absolutely never”? Really? You want to go to the mat on that one?
2. This destroys my notion that all guys who like me would describe me to their friends as being “busty and hilarious.” I guess I’m just relegated to “busty.” Shucks.
Oh wait, but it gets better! The noble author pontificates:
“Now, why is this? Why is it the case?, I mean. Why are women, who have the whole male world at their mercy, not funny? Please do not pretend not to know what I am talking about.”
1. The syntax of your last sentence is terrible.
2. That aside, just no.
There are actual interesting things to be studied and said about how gender socialization relates to humor, but if you start with the premise that “Women Aren’t Funny,” you’re missing the mark entirely.
